Monotone love

Remember our school uniforms? Since school, ever worn such a monotone outfit (except all black or all white) from head to toe? Well, I haven’t:). An all-black outfit is possibly the easiest to pull off (read: SRK :P). A pristine Chikankari patiala suit is my favorite all-white outfit, which is again a great but safe choice. The difficulty goes to level 500 when we try to pull off monotone outfits with brighter hues.

Now take a moment and think - how can we wear yellow or purple from head to toe?  This dressing style can be a struggle, for instance, with colleagues at work asking us, “Why are you dressed like a bandwala today!?” I feel the trick here is to combine different shades and textures of the same color. Add a pinch of accessories and you will stand out in a monotone outfit.

With a few tips and tricks, you can perfect the monotone trend. Once you figure it out, you’ll realize that this is a fashionable yet easy outfit for work as well as an all-day outdoor event:

  • Combine different textures or fabrics. For example, leather with silk or georgette with cotton.
  • Add different shades of the same color family. For example, navy blue and sky blue and cobalt blue.
  • Wear a bright colored shoe of a contrasting shade. For example, with a peach-colored monotone look, wear maroon pumps to spice up the outfit.
  • Add statement jewellery. A neckpiece or earrings will accentuate the outfit. Optionally, flash quirky sunglasses or a chic belt.

For this photoshoot, I was really excited to wear this gorgeous and flowy maxi dress from Cupcakes and Closet. Chic is what comes to mind when looking through their product offering. What sets them apart is the colorful swimwear and elegant maxi dresses on display. With their confidence in my ability to style a maxi dress, I took upon this personal challenge. I usually keep away from wearing cocktail dresses or evening gowns (with my broad shoulders and all!). But what good is a challenge if it cannot kick you out of your comfort zone?! :) I did just that in this look - a strapless maxi dress with a casual blazer. I added minimalistic jewellery and a neat ponytail to offset the blue and to keep the lines clean. This is my version of an all-day cocktail dress.:)
